Ephraim McDowell (11 Nov 1771 â€" 25 Jun 1830) who was the first surgeon in the world to remove an ovarian tumor (Christmas day 1809). This surgery was performed on Jane Todd Crawford and was performed without anesthesia, antiseptics or antibiotics, none of which were known to the medical profession at that time. His most famous patient was U.S. President James K. Polk for whom he removed a gall stone and repaired a hernia. He is honored with a statue in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall that was donated by the state of Kentucky in 1929. Ephraim McDowell’s wife was Sarah Shelby, daughter of Isaac Shelby, the first and fifth governor of Kentucky. Dr. Ephraim McDowell and I share common ancestors in Michael Woods Sr. (1684-1762) and Lady Mary Campbell (1690-1742). He is my 2nd Cousin 6 times removed. He is (and I am) also related to actress Andie MacDowell.
